The following are profiles of the South African hop varieties we carry.

AFRICAN QUEEN (FORMERLY 98J17/63)
African Queen is a South African bred high alpha, daylight neutral hop whose pedigree is a diploid seedling selected from a cross between 91J7/25 and an SA male 94US2/118.  The aroma profile includes dank, blueberries, stone fruit, black currant, gooseberries, bubble gum, lemongrass, and chilies.  Total oil content is around 1.3 percent, alpha acids range from 12 to 17 percent, and cohumulone is low at about 26 percent.  Works well with all hop-forward beers, including American and Belgian styles.  Also works well with subtle blended beers such as those with coffee, fruit, and spices.  Possible similar hops: Mosaic, Simcoe, Citra.

SOUTHERN AROMA
Southern Aroma is a South African bred aroma, daylight neutral hop whose pedigree is a diploid seedling originating from Saaz and Hallertauer Mettelfreuh crossing.  The aroma profile includes floral, fields of flowers, woody/spicy, and fruity.  Total oil content is around 0.6 to 0.8 percent, alpha acids range from 3 to 6 percent, and cohumulone is very low at about 16 to 22 percent.  A hop with classic noble hop character and a fruity South African terroir backdrop.  Works well with classic European and English styles where traditional noble hops may be used, but also hop forward beers of American and Belgian origins.  Possible similar hops: Motueka.

SOUTHERN PASSION
Southern Passion is a South African bred aroma daylight neutral hop whose pedigree is a diploid seedling originating from Saaz and Hallertauer crossing.  The aroma profile includes passion fruit (granadilla), guava, red berries, melon, calendula, and grapefruit – very unique.  Total oil content is about 1 percent, alpha acids range from 8 to 12 percent, and cohumulone is very low from 16 to 20 percent.  Noble hop pedigree represented in alpha and beta acids being about equal.  Works well with a variety of beer styles including lightly hopped session beers, and all hop-forward beers of American and Belgian origins such as pale ales, IPAs and Saisons.  Possible similar hops: none.

SOUTHERN STAR
Southern Star is a South African bred high alpha, daylight neutral hop whose pedigree is a diploid seedling selected from Outeniqua and an SA male OF2/93.  The aroma profile includes tangerine, blueberries, pine, tropical fruit, dank, and white pepper.  Total oil content is about 1.6 percent, alpha acids range from 12 to 18 percent, and cohumulone is low at about 31 percent.  Myrcene is notably higher at about 39 percent of total oil content.  Works well all hop-forward beers and is as a bittering hop with clean bitterness.  Possible similar hops: Equinox, El Dorado, Summit, Herkules.

EXPERIMENTAL VARIETIES
Very limited information is available on these experimental South African varieties at this point. 

N1/69
The aroma profile of N1/69 is Kool-Aid, Juicy Fruit, mango, citrus, plums, dank, and pungent.  Alpha acids are 13.4 percent and cohumulone is 23 percent in 2016.

U1/108
The aroma profile of U1/108 is litchie, mango, guava, citrus, lemongrass, stone fruit, and coconut.  Alpha acids are 17.9 percent and cohumulone is 26 percent in 2016.

U3/132
The aroma profile of U3/132 is ripe mango, watermelon, pineapple, guava, tangerine peel, tropical punch, and dank.  Alpha acids are 17.8 percent and cohumulone is 27 percent in 2016.

XJA2/436
The aroma profile of XJA2/436 is bergamot citrus, lemon, candied papaya, ripe cantaloupe, gooseberries, resin, and tobacco.  Alpha acids ranged from 12.9 to 15.4 percent in 2016.
